ictQATAR Connected Speakers Series Addresses the Future of Internet Privacy

ictQATAR held its new "Connected Speakers" event, featuring Jules Polonetsky, Co-Chair and Director of the Future of Privacy Forum.

Do you know where your data goes online? Probably not. In today’s hyper-connected world, there is more information out there about us than ever before, much of which we are willingly sharing! The Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR) addressed the important issue of Internet privacy at its latest Connected Speaker event, which featured Jules Polonetsky, Co-Chair and Director of the Future of Privacy Forum.

Polonetsky, one of the leading experts in Internet privacy issues and has a special expertise in online data usage, smart grids, mobile data, apps and social media. The event took place on Monday, November 28, 2011 at the Sharq Village & Spa in Doha, and was attended by nearly 500 people. In his talk, Polonetsky explored the potential positive and negative uses of the abundance of online data, and discussed how we can shape a future where the abundance of data is used to benefit individuals and society.

“Society is approaching a turning point that could well determine the future of privacy. Policy-makers and business leaders, as well as individuals, are making decisions about technology practices that will either ensure that data is used for the benefit of individuals and society, or take us down a path where we are controlled by how others use our data. Although there are cultural differences around the world, societies that can implement forward looking policies will be the ones that reap the benefits of tomorrow’s internet innovations,” said Jules Polonestsky during his presentation.

Jules Polonetsky has served since November 2008 as Co-Chair and Director of the Future of Privacy Forum, a Washington DC-based think tank seeking to improve the state of online privacy by advancing responsible data practices. In 2011, he was appointed to the Department of Homeland Security Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee. As former Chief Privacy Officer and Senior Vice President for Consumer Advocacy at AOL, his responsibilities included ensuring AOL’s users could trust the company with their information and for educating employees about best practices for advertising, content, and product development.

Polonetsky also served as Chief Privacy Officer and Special Counsel at DoubleClick, which at the time was the largest internet based advertising and marketing technology company in New York City. Here he instituted clients privacy policies and managed the compliance of data protection requirements for DoubleClick subsidiaries world-wide. In 2001, Crain’s NY Business magazine name Polonetsky as one of the top technology leaders in New York City.
